Bamboo and Plum Blossom
Bamboo and Plum Blossoms is a whopper. Several katagami have ‘rich textures’ in their key words. Multiple graphic techniques are used to build the pattern. Think of it like music; different elements are brought together to build a rhythm. In this example strategies include;
naturalistic rendering. Large/small, and graphic line which means that the line shifts in width to make it more expressive.
Here, clusters of bamboo leaves are rendered in light lines on dark ground. The plant as it might appear in nature works in the composition as a radiating form like a star. A second, thicker line like a vine, meanders through the pattern pulling these independent forms together. Scattered through the background are silhouettes of plum blossoms and dots pushing and pulling the eye between large and small.
Small 'Meiji' Size — Typical dimensions of small 'Meiji' type are 7.75” x 13.5” or 8.75” x 13.5”
Dark Ground Composition — in a dark ground stencil, the page is dark and lines and forms are cut away to appear light in the printing.
Silk Reinforcement — this stencil is reinforced with silk threads woven specifically to this pattern inserted between two sheets of carved paper.
