Chinese Style Brocade
This stencil depicts karakusa, ‘Chinese Grass’ as a scrolling vine. The design was introduced from China and became very popular in the Meiji period for indigo dyed bedding or futon covers. It is often punctuated with images of peonies, chrysanthemum, cranes or tortoises.
